Pumpkins at at Alfriston Clergy House.

Autumn bounty at Alfriston Clergy House. Take inspiration for some warming autumn cooking as you walk around the raised kitchen garden. With traditional apple tree varieties in the orchard laden with fruit and pumpkins peeking through their cover of leaves, this is the perfect place to rest and reflect as the days draw in. Autumn sees a bumper crop of pumpkins at the bottom of the kitchen garden, just in time for Halloween. The long green leaves of the leeks are standing proud, waiting to be made into a deliciously tasty and easy leek and potato soup.
Halloween Hunt 21st October - 29th October 2017 10:30am - 4:30. Event is free but normal admission charges apply.

Folklore and fairy tale trail at Batemans

Explore the garden and discover some of the magic of Kipling's fairy tales on our half-term trail. There'll be fairies to be found in our garden over half-term. Come and discover the folklore and fairy tales of Sussex that inspired Kipling's 'Puck of Pook's Hill' and other children's tales brought to life on our half-term trail. For those that find our hidden fairies, there'll be a reward. This event is £2 and normal admission charges apply for the venue.

Bodiam Castle

Bodium National Trust

Family Fun at the castle this autumn. Bring the family to Bodium Castle this autumn and climb the towers to get a better view of the seaonal colours all around. Open daily 10:30am to 5pm. As the summer fades and the great oak trees around the castle slowly begin to adopt their autumn colours, come and explore the castle with the family. At half-term we'll have a trail and our Crones will be back with their peculiar brand of mayhem.
October half term at Bodium Castle Saturday 21st to Sunday 29th October 11am - 4pm Bring the family to Bodiam Castle this half-term and enjoy some Hallowe'en fun. Have a go at our trail as we set the children off on a hunt around the castle. £2 per trail, including a prize for each successful hunter. Normal admission charges apply for the venue. Crone's Corner Hocus pocus Hallowe'en at Bodium Castle Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 October 11am and 3pm. Are you brave enough to enter Crones' Corner to experience their unique concoctions and magical tales. Each year when Hallowe'en comes around there's fun and games in the castle when the Crones come to visit. Pop into their den and listen to their magical tales and see some of the wonderful potions and concoctions that they create. But be wary of their unconventional cooking and treat them respectfully. Normal admission charges apply for the venue.

Autumn Fun this half-term The garden and woods are perfect for some autumn inspired fun. With colourful trees and lots of autumn leaves there is something to keep everyone entertained this half-term. Family trail Sun 24th September - 19th November: Hooray for decay Follow the trail of colourful wooden leaves through the garden and discover what really happens after a tree dies. It is just the beginning of a hidden and interesting cycle full of bugs, decay and fungi. Pick up the trail from our welcome hub from 10.00am to 3.30pm. £1 per trail, normal admission applies. Colourful leaves The garden and woods has a large variety of different tree species and this produces a kaleidoscope of colourful leaves in autumn. Take some time to look at the different shapes, sizes and colours as you explore. The fallen leaves can be collected to make autumn pictures and patterns.

Petworth House and Park

Visit Petworth this October half-term and take part in some spine tingling activities. Enrol in the Petworth Witches and Wizards Academy and make some spooky craft to take home. For those after an adventure, take on the spooktastic Hallowe'en trail around the Pleasure Grounds. The Spook-tastic Hallowe'en Trail The witches have escaped from the Macbeth painting in the Mansion and they are causing havoc around Petworth. This October half-term journey around the Pleasure Grounds meeting some of the team at Petworth who need your help to solve challenges and spot creepy clues in order get the witches back inside the painting. Running from 22nd October to 29th October pick up your trail from the Car Park or Church Lodge Reception. The trail around the Pleasure Grounds is suitable for children aged 5 to 11 and is accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs however there are some steep hills. Trails are £3 and normal admission prices apply. The Petworth Academy for Witches and Wizards Calling all young witches and wizards, join the Petworth Academy to conjure up some magical craft. From Monday 23rd October to Friday 27th October enrol in the Academy for a master class in making a spooky hat, magical animal companion and spellbinding potion. Meet our terrific teachers in the courtyard between the mansion and the Servants' Quarters for a spooky session of craft starting at 11am and finishing at 1pm. Tickets are £7 per child and includes entry to the Pleasure Ground and park but there is an additional charge for entry to the mansion. To allow more space for our budding witches and wizards we ask that only two adults per group attend the Academy. Booking for the Academy is essential on 0344 249 1895. October half-term holiday fun at Standen Saturday 21 October to Sunday 29 October. Keep the kids occupied this half term with apple tastings, autumn trails, and strolls through crunchy leaves. We have trails inspired by the food harvested from Mrs Beale's kitchen garden and for those feeling creative, take part in harvest crafts. If you'd rather enjoy the fresh air you can take a stroll through our gardens or head out through crunchy leaves into the surrounding woodland and even tick off some of your 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾. October half-term trail Join us for a fun trail over half-term and there's even a prize at the end. £2 per child with prize. During October we will be celebrating the produce harvested from the Kitchen garden with tastings, demonstrations and sharing seasonal recipes for you to try at home. Autumn walks Autumn is a great time to explore the garden and woodlands at Standen. Take in the view over the Sussex Weald from the new Rock Top Walk or wander through the woods and crunch the leaves. Download a trail from our walks page . Bothy Discover 'Bothy' by artist Will Shannon. Perched atop sandstone rocks this small brick and wood built structure is the perfect spot to take a rest during your explorations. Autumn Harvest: Day in the life weekend Discover how the house was really used during the time of the Beales. Sat 14th & Sun 15th October 10am - 4pm This weekend staff and volunteers will be dressing up and showing how the house would have been used by the Beales and servants at Standen. Saturday is Apple day where you can help turn apples grown in the orchard in to juice and taste the different varieties. On Sunday we welcome David Tas the last farmer at Standen to share his stories of how the farm was run. This event is free, but normal admission charges apply for the venue. Spooky bat walks Wed 1st - Friday 3rd November 5pm - 6:30pm Join us for a spooky bat-themed walk in the woodland. Event ticket prices Adult £8.00 Child £5.00 and normal admission charges apply.

Autumn fun for families at Uppark. This autumn see the garden turn from lush greens into golds reds and oranges. Visit with your family and get stuck in to our trails and activities. It’s that time of year when bonfires are burning, chills run down your spine and things go bump in the night. It must be Hallowe’en. Here at Uppark you’ll discover our new, bat-themed activity trail for younger children. There’s loads of 50 things to do before you’re 11¾ challenges too. Just pick up a scrapbook when you arrive and head outside. Family half-term bat trail Saturday 21 October - Sunday 29 October 10am - 4pm 2017 As Hallowe’en draws near, we’re challenging little ones to think like a bat, on this activity-packed family trail through our garden and the south meadow. Test your skills at echolocation, practice your flying and have a go at roosting. Children of all ages will enjoy exploring the house to hunt out some of our local bats who have found places to roost in the warmth. Suggested donation £1 per trail to help towards our conservation work. Every visit you make with your family helps our garden team continue looking after wildlife by bulding bird boxes for our local birds.
